Writing listings that travel between marketplaces
A portable listing is written once, with its facts kept outside any marketplace, so putting it on a new marketplace is assembly, not rewriting. Photos, measurements and condition notes carry over as they are. The title, category and item details get redone for each marketplace's search.
What should you keep on record for every item?
Keep one source record per item, separate from any marketplace, with everything you'd need to list it anywhere. With it, a new marketplace is a copy job, and a second marketplace becomes cheap enough to be worth running.
- The SKU, and where the item physically is
- What it is: brand, model, generation, size, colorway and any codes on it
- Every measurement, with how you measured it
- Condition notes and every flaw, written plainly
- The photo set, in a folder named by SKU
- What you paid and the lowest price you'll take
What carries over between marketplaces, and what doesn't?
Facts about the object carry over between marketplaces; anything that depends on a marketplace's search or rules doesn't. Photos, measurements and the condition description should be the same everywhere. The title, category and item details have to be redone for each one.
| Part of the listing | Carries over? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | Yes, mostly | Crops differ, but the set works everywhere. Shoot square-safe and you avoid most trouble |
| Measurements | Yes | They're facts about the item |
| Condition and flaws | Yes | Keep them identical everywhere. A flaw missing on one marketplace is a return waiting to happen |
| Description body | Mostly | Formatting and length limits differ, so write short, plain paragraphs |
| Title | No | Each marketplace's search works differently. Rewrite it for each one |
| Category and item details | No | Every marketplace has its own categories and fields |
| Price | Sometimes | Fees and buyers differ, so the right price can too |
How do you write a description that works on every marketplace?
- Short paragraphs, no heavy formatting. HTML that works on one marketplace gets stripped on another.
- Important facts first. Some marketplaces cut descriptions short, and many buyers only read the opening lines.
- Don't name the marketplace. "See my other eBay listings" is wrong the moment you copy it anywhere else.
- Don't describe marketplace mechanics. Offers, bidding and shipping work differently everywhere, and a description of the wrong one confuses buyers.
- Give measurements in inches and centimeters. It costs nothing.
Why do titles need rewriting for each marketplace?
Titles need rewriting because each marketplace's search reads them differently. Some reward exact brand and model numbers; some are browse-first, where the photo does the selling and the title does less; and character limits vary. Write each title from the same facts, for the marketplace it's going on.
The eBay listing is usually the most structured version, with its title, category and item specifics, so for most resellers it's the one the others get copied from. FlowLister, the tool we make, writes that eBay listing from your photos, and its Crosslisting add-on, in beta, posts the eBay listing to Poshmark, Mercari and Depop from your own Chrome browser (flowlister.com/features/, read September 23, 2026). Check each copied listing on its marketplace; the fields don't map one to one.
How do you stop crosslisted listings drifting apart?
Change the source record first, then copy the change to every marketplace. Listings for the same item drift apart over time: a price cut in one place, a flaw added in another, a new photo somewhere else. The condition description is the dangerous one to let drift, because a buyer who saw the thinner version has a fair complaint.
Never edit a live listing and plan to update the record later. Later doesn't come, the record stops being trustworthy, and the delisting routine depends on it.

FlowLister writes the eBay listing your other marketplaces get copied from: title, category, item specifics, a price from sold listings and shipping, from your photos, and you publish to eBay in one click. It's AI, so it misses things. We make it, so read this as a disclosure, not a review. Nothing on this site needs it.
